Snoring and Sleep Apnea Therapy
Do you snore loudly and frequently? Do you feel fatigued, irritable, or forgetful during the day? If you answered yes to either of these questions, you may have obstructive sleep apnea, a serious medical condition that Dr. Brady might be able to alleviate with a simple sleep apnea or snoring appliance.
During sleep, soft oral tissues in relax and block airflow, causing lapses in breathing. The brain senses lack of oxygen and triggers the body to breathe. As air tries to force its way through restricted passages, the sound we know as snoring occurs. Sufferers of snoring and sleep apnea repeatedly awaken or enter a lighter stage of sleep. The result is disrupted slumber and daytime grogginess, irritability, and mental confusion.
While most sleep apnea patients snore, not all snorers have sleep apnea. What's the difference? Sleep apnea is a clinical condition in which breathing stops for 10 seconds or longer, repeatedly during a sleep session. Sleep apnea sufferers face increased risk for heart attack and other serious health problems, as well.
If Dr. Brady suspects you have sleep apnea, he'll refer to you a sleep center for diagnosis, then work with your physician to prescribe appropriate treatment. Many patients find relief with an oral appliance that alleviates both snoring and sleep apnea. It works by holding the lower jaw slightly forward, which opens the airway. Dr. Brady will customize your snoring appliance to ensure proper fit and comfort.
